Airdrieonians ended a three-game losing run with a 1-0 victory over Alloa Athletic on Saturday. Liam McLeish scored the only goal after 11 minutes, assisted by Lewis Gibson, to secure three key points for the Diamonds.
The win, their first in four league matches, moves Airdrieonians up the table and provides a significant morale boost. Manager Rhys McCabe told the club's media team the result was built on a solid defensive foundation. "The clean sheet was the platform," McCabe said. "We've been working hard on our shape and the lads executed it perfectly today."
McLeish makes the difference
The decisive moment came early when Gibson found space on the left and delivered a low cross. McLeish met it with a first-time finish from inside the six-yard box, giving the Alloa goalkeeper no chance. It was the striker's second goal of the season and his first in league play since August.
Alloa Athletic, who had won their previous two matches, pushed for an equaliser in the second half but found Airdrie's defence resolute. Goalkeeper Josh Rae was called into action to make a sharp save from a long-range effort in the 68th minute, preserving the slender lead.
Turning the form around
This result halts a difficult spell for Airdrieonians, who had lost their last three League One fixtures. Their recent form shows one win, one draw, and three losses from the last five outings. Before this victory, they suffered defeats to Queen of the South, Stirling Albion, and Ross County.
The team's only other recent win was a 1-0 success against St. Mirren U21 in a cup match on 8 September, where Dapo Mebude was the scorer. You can review the team's complete recent results and upcoming schedule on our fixtures page.
Squad depth tested
McCabe made two changes from the side that lost to Queen of the South the previous weekend, bringing in Gibson and McLeish. The manager highlighted the importance of squad rotation with a busy period of matches ahead. "We have a strong group, and everyone needs to be ready," he added. The current squad list shows several players competing for starting roles in attack and midfield.
With this win, Airdrieonians climb away from the lower reaches of the division. The three points provide a foundation to build upon as they aim for consistency. The full standings show the tightly packed nature of the early-season League One table.
Airdrieonians' next match is a home fixture against Cove Rangers on 19 September. The team will look to record back-to-back league wins for the first time this campaign.
