Airdrie United Sign Lewis Gibson from Raith Rovers
Airdrie United have made a new signing, bolstering their squad with the arrival of Lewis Gibson from Raith Rovers. The 21-year-old midfielder joins the Diamonds as they continue their summer rebuild under new gaffer John Rankin.
What happened?
Gibson has arrived at New Broomfield after providing a goal and six assists while at Montrose in the second half of last season. The midfielder is in contention to make his debut in tonight's KDM Evolution Trophy group phase match at Dumbarton.
Why it matters for Airdrie United
The signing of Gibson is a boost to Airdrie United's midfield, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. With top clubs 'stockpiling' strikers, Rankin is looking to bring in a new forward to bolster his side's attacking options.
What comes next?
Airdrie United face Alloa Athletic in their next fixture on November 7, 2026, at Alloa's Recreation Park. The Diamonds will be looking to build on their recent performances and continue their push up the Scottish Championship table.
Airdrieonians has announced a new signing - but it is not yet the striker fans were hoping for. Midfielder Lewis Gibson has arrived from Raith Rovers to bolster John Rankin's ranks at New Broomfield, as the League One outfit continue their summer rebuild under their new gaffer. Diamonds fans have been crying out for a new forward at the club over recent weeks, but their latest addition stregthen them in the middle of the park with former Queen of the South winger Gibson signing up for the Monklands men.
It comes as Rankin revealed his striker frustrations to Lanarkshire Live Sport, claiming top clubs are 'stockpiling' strikers and making it difficult for him to strengthen his squad at the top end of the pitch. Rankin said: "Teams at the top end of the Scottish pyramid are stockpiling strikers and centre forwards, simply because they are scared of running out. At our level you are trying to build the next one and hope someone catches fire. There is a lot of good build-up play in teams at this level, it is just putting the finishing touches to it. If there is anyone out there that can do that, they will make themselves a millionaire."
Airdrie drew a blank in their 0-0 stalemate at Cove Rangers in their League One opener on August 1 and scored from the penalty spot through Liam McLeish in Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to East Kilbride. However, Gibson may well help the Diamonds find their way to goal more regularly given he provided a goal and six assists while at Montrose in the second half of last season.
